How to Develop a Habit of Positive Thinking
Positive thinking – which in turn leads to positive action – will absolutely change your life.
There was a time before I turned to entrepreneurship when I worked as an electrical engineer. Every day on the way to work I would stop at the local corner shop and grab my daily newspaper – my habit being that as soon as I got into work before the working day began, I’d sit, have a coffee and read the news.
Before my day had even properly begun, I had already filled my head with the negativity of the news which would leave me feeling low, deflated and quite negative myself, too. Absorbing all of that negativity at the start of the day meant that everywhere I turned and everywhere I looked, that was all I could see. Just how bad the world was. Just how difficult life was.
But all of that changed in 2015 when I decided to change my life for the better; building an incredible business with my partner and truly beginning to live life on my own terms. The most powerful lesson I learned in that year was that:
Thoughts turn into meaning. Meaning turns into emotion. And emotion turns into action.
This became my mantra and here I am, all of these years later, thankful to say that positivity has become my way of life. I find the positive in every circumstance, in every situation. I don’t focus on problems; I figure out solutions. Fear no longer drives me; I’m driven by passion, motivation and hunger for success.
(And I no longer read the newspaper FYI.😉)
So, if you’re struggling with embracing positivity in your own life, here are some top tips that I implemented myself, on how to develop a habit of positive thinking, which will, in turn, lead to positive action and a truly positive and joyous life.

Top Tips
1. Create a massive action eco-system
Your environment – which means absolutely everything that you surround yourself with – is so extremely powerful. You are constantly absorbing the energy from everything in your vicinity, and if that energy is negative, then that’s exactly what you’re taking in too.
Create an environment that doesn’t allow in any negativity whatsoever. This includes the things you watch on TV, the people you follow on social media, your family and your friends – even down to the clothes you wear and the music you listen to.
If you want to have a positive life, you need to remove anything that isn’t positive – so go on a spree of removing anything that threatens to bring you down. And on the flip side, fill your life with positivity in every respect.
This is a massive first step which you will feel the effects of pretty much straight away but that will last throughout your life, as long as you maintain the upkeep of your positive environment.
2. Get clear on your goals
Many of us drift through life with no idea where we’re actually going. We don’t really know what we want from life because we’ve never really taken the time to figure it all out.
But, did you know that those who have goals are 10 times more likely to succeed than those without? This is one of the biggest reasons why getting clear on your goals and doing some goal-setting exercises is so important.
Having goals automatically puts you into a positive state of mind; you finally have a vision, you know what direction you’re heading in and you feel like you have a purpose.
So take some time to get clear on your own goals.
What do you want to achieve by the end of the year? By the end of next year? In five years time? In your life? Once you know, you can start making a plan to get there. Block out the fear and get EXCITED. It’s time to create the life YOU want to live.

3. Become aware of your conditioning
To undo your negative thinking habits, it’s vital to understand how you picked up those habits in the first place. And a lot of this comes down to negative conditioning during our upbringing.
Many of us have grown up with a negative attitude towards life and so many different aspects of it, especially money. And there’s no one to blame because wherever we picked up those beliefs, those people were also probably subjected to the same growing up – unconsciously passing their beliefs on to us.
You may think that money is scarce and difficult to acquire. That life is tough. That you’re not capable of certain things because of X, Y and Z. But this is just conditioning. And the good news is: you can RE-CONDITION yourself.
There is so much available to us in this day and age that there is no excuse to strengthen those old, toxic belief systems anymore.
Go on YouTube or Spotify and start consuming positive content. Read about success stories. Use positive affirmations to change your old beliefs.
You can literally change your mind about anything – just be super vigilant about what you change it to.
4. Become aware of your fear and negative thoughts
Even when you do learn to embrace a more positive way of life, there will be times when fear and negativity crop up. And that’s okay! It just shows you where there is more work to be done.
When this happens, stop yourself and take a moment to observe these thoughts and figure out why they’ve come up and what they’re trying to show you. Once you know this, you’ll be able to dispel the fear, flip them on their head and turn them into more positive thoughts.
It’s just about becoming more mindful of the thoughts you’re thinking and learning to release the ones that don’t make you feel good.
5. Build momentum in your life
As hard as things may seem at certain times in your life and despite how negative you feel about everything, you can start making a change by taking small daily actions towards one of your goals (or all of them!).
It’s true that the first step is always the hardest, but once you’ve taken it you’ll start building momentum and the whole universe will get behind you to push you forward. Whether you want to improve your fitness, eat healthily, start a business, build a new skill… whatever it is, it just takes commitment from you to take action consistently.
The more you do, day-by-day, and the more you celebrate your wins along the way, the more positive you will become. That positivity has a ripple effect and as the momentum builds you’ll want to do and achieve more and more, in all different areas of your life.
Start building momentum by taking action every single day.

A challenge
When you’ve been thinking negatively your whole life, especially when you haven’t even been aware of it, it’s not going to be a simple overnight switch where you’ll wake up one morning and the world will be bright and beautiful and life will be perfect. No way.
But you have to start somewhere to change your old negative beliefs and one thing I highly recommend is a daily gratitude practice. If you wake up and start your day with gratitude, you will watch and behold as it spreads and lights up your entire life.
Start with completing a daily gratitude journal for 30 days where you write down at least 3 things that you’re grateful for, every single day. This encourages you to look for the good in your life and will help you to focus on more good as you go about your day. And so, will actually help to bring more goodness into your life.
This could absolutely change your life for the better – if change is what you really, really want. So are you up for the challenge?
Finally…
Roy T. Bennet says in the Light of the Heart:
“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”
We each have a choice each and every day that we are blessed to be alive. We get to choose where we place our focus.
If you want to develop a habit of positive thinking and live a positive life, focus on positivity and that’s what you’ll always get more of. Start now. Start today.
Here’s to your massive success!
