How to Reverse Engineer Your Goals for Success
It’s quite simple to set yourself a goal… but achieving that goal, on the other hand, is a whole other story, proven by the 92% of New Year’s goals that fail by the 15th January!
Studies by Gail Matthews at Dominican University have proven that strategies for effective goal achievement include:
- Writing down your goals
- Sharing your goals
- And providing progress updates to those you’ve confided in
But when it comes to actually setting the achievement of your goals into action, I’m a huge believer and advocate for reverse engineering your goals and bringing them right down to the things you need to do on a daily basis in order to achieve success.
And as you know, I love creating systems – I believe in them from my core, because systems really do work and I have achieved massive success with my business through systemisation.

Reverse Engineer an E-Commerce Goal
So let’s get straight into reverse engineering an e-commerce goal – after all, many of you reading most probably have an Amazon FBA business, or are looking to getting started.
Begin by focussing in on your desired outcome: how much in sales do you want to make on a monthly basis?
You then need to take this big goal and make it smaller by breaking it down into smaller, achievable, attainable goals. What do you need to do today to achieve that monthly goal of sales? What actions can you take now?
Watch the video for a full explanation of each area, but here is a brief overview of how I would break down a monthly sales goal of £10,000 per month. (Please note that the below figures are not accurate, they are just being used as an example.)
SALES FOR MONTH = £10,000
AVERAGE SELL-FOR PRICE = £10 PER UNIT
NUMBER OF UNITS SOLD = 1,000 UNITS
NUMBER OF UNITS LIVE/SHIPPED = 1,100 UNITS
NUMBER OF UNITS SHIPPED PER DAY = 50 UNITS
AVERAGE NUMBER OF ASINS PURCHASED = 5
NUMBER OF WINNERS PER DAY = 10
AVERAGE % OF WINNERS VS LOSERS = 50%
NUMBER OF SOURCING/LEADS PER DAY = 20 LEADS
AVERAGE BUY FOR COST PER DAY = £250
These numbers are fictional as I mentioned above, but you need to take the above idea and apply it to your own business.
Take a look at your own sales right now. What is your average sell-for price? How many units have you sold? Once you’re aware of these numbers, you can start the reverse-engineering process and adjust the above process to fit your own monthly sales goal.
Apply This Process to Anything
With reverse engineering your goals, this process doesn’t apply just to business goals – you can apply this to anything and make it work.
Whether you have a health goal, a fitness goal, a creative goal or whatever else it may be, by taking your one big goal and breaking it down into smaller, attainable chunks, you’ll make it much easier for yourself and much more likely that you’ll achieve it.
Break your big goal down into yearly, monthly, weekly and then daily goals, including the actions needed to achieve them. Once you’ve done that, you can begin to create systems to make achieving each of those goals easier.
Remember, you can never just go all in right at the beginning and hope for big results. The small actions you take every day will all add up to achieving the success of your final goal – and the process and journey of getting there is where you will grow, learn and become even better than you were before.
Finally…
So if there’s a big goal that you have in mind, write it down and start by asking yourself what you can do every day to get there. The results will come if you break down your goal, celebrate every step of the process and keep taking action every single day.
